Artigas Mausoleum (Plaza Independencia, Montevideo) – built during the 1930s, this monument, located at Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja, is dedicated to Uruguay’s national hero José Artigas (who led the country to independence from Spain). His remains are kept in an underground room underneath the statue.
